Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau discusses Jaime's fate

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7, episode 4, "The Spoils of War." Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was caught in quite the proverbial pickle during the latest episode of Game of Thrones, battling against Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), who lived up to her name as the Mother of Dragon, and was nearly burnt to a crisp in the process. Just as it seemed Jaime was literally toast in face of the fire-breathing beast he attempted to vanquish, Ser Bronn of the Blackwater (Jerome Flynn) tackles him into a lake. Weighed down by his heavy armor and his full-gold false hand, Jaime is last seen sinking into the depths of the water, leaving everyone wondering what will happen next.

Chatting with Entertainment Weekly, Coster-Waldau opened up about the intense battle scene and what he believes is Jaime's ultimate fate.

Coster-Waldau commended Jaime's soldiers, most of whom were killed by Drogon the dragon's fire breath, for their bravery but admitted that the ice-haired Targaryen is still technically the good guy in the situation. "Even though Daenerys is the hero and the Lannisters are the villains, being burned alive is not great," Coster-Waldau said. "It's a terrifying thing when this monster flamethrower comes along and incinerates thousands and thousands of men who are just doing their job."

But what was even scarier was the episode's script direction that followed. Coster-Waldau revealed that in the moments when Jaime runs toward Dany and a wounded Drogon, the script told the actors, "One of our main characters is about to die…"

The Danish actor discussed that pivotal sequence, and what was going on inside his character's head. Jaime is such an idiot that he thinks for a second, 'If I can do this, I can win the whole thing in a Hail Mary,'" Coster-Waldau said. "It's not going to end well for Jaime Lannister."

Though he didn't explicitly state whether Jaime will live to see another day or slay another person he claims to be a usurper, Coster-Waldau hinted that he "can't imagine" a happy ending for Jaime, given his tumultuous relationship with Cersei (Lena Headey). Where Jaime's treason against the former Targaryen crown saw him rise to fame, perhaps his incestuous loyalty will be his downfall.

Game of Thrones will surely heat up (no pun intended) even more in the next episode. Until then, take a look at the Game of Thrones mysteries that have yet to be solved
